As Wi-Fi advances, so does the need to mitigate disconnections, route issues, and quickly solve problems. The internship EE Master student Dheepak Gobinath completed last summer at Qualcomm in the Bay Area achieved just that. There, Gobinath interned as a Software Development Engineer (SDE). The internship’s core function? To apply AI and LLMs for software automation and anomaly detection in Wi-Fi testing.
According to Dheepak, handling simultaneous, multi-type Wi-Fi disconnections among hundreds of clients in real-time testing proves challenging. In the past, software engineers relied on manual log parsing and analysis, which led to delayed debugging.
The team Gobinath worked with integrated AI into the software. This gave the software the ability to “describe latent performance anomalies or functional regressions that would be difficult for a human to find QUICKLY,” Gobinath said.
Advancements made through the automation and debugging software will prove beneficial moving forward as Wi-Fi-7 continues its rollout and adoption. “The software will be critical for effective analysis and expediting the debugging process,” Gobinath said.
Prior to his master’s degree at Penn, Gobinath worked for two years at Qualcomm India. Beginning with modem projects, he transitioned into automation software engineering, deepening his software development expertise.
At Penn, Gobinath actively specializes in AI, network systems, and business, seamlessly blending technical expertise with strategic insight. Within his engineering degree, he carved out significant space for business coursework by pursuing four Wharton courses: Fintech, Applied Neuroscience for Business Decisions, People Analytics, and Predictive Analytics for Business. In addition, through his work with a startup at Penn’s Venture Lab, Gobinath is honing the hands-on skills every early-stage entrepreneur needs.
For now, he’s enjoying life on the East Coast. “I love the historic architecture in Philadelphia,” Gobinath says. Philadelphia also provides ample opportunities for walking and biking. Then of course, there’s his love for winter and the welcoming chill it carries.
