ESE PhD ‘24 Michael D’Agati shares his experience as a Sr. Engineer at RTX RTRC

ESE PhD alumni Michael D’Agati, advised by Professor Troy Olsson, works as a Senior Engineer at the RTX Technologies Research Center (RTRC). In this capacity, D’Agati provides valuable new research ideas and capabilities to the RTX business units, which includes Raytheon, Collins Aerospace, Pratt and Whitney.

D’Agati’s research at RTX RTRC “is primarily focused on microelectronics, MEMS, and RF devices and systems, but can expand into other areas like photonics or AI optimization, depending on the business unit needs,” D’Agati explains. “Ultimately, I am responsible for generating new ideas and solving problems in the broad areas of microelectronics and electromagnetic waves.”

D’Agati’s research at Penn in multiferroic magnetic sensors “prepared me for my current role by introducing me to functional materials, RF concepts, device microfabrication, and MEMS,” says D’Agati. “Under Troy’s guidance, I gained skills in Multiphysics modeling and simulation, MEMS design, microfabrication, and RF testing.”

Beyond the research depth obtained at Penn, the skills D’Agati gained gave him the ability to “identify a problem statement, quickly learn what others have tried in the field, and apply past learnings to find a solution.”

D’Agati’s role at  RTX RTRC gives him the opportunity to both expand and diversify his knowledge and skills beyond academic pursuits.

“My current role requires me to connect my scientific ideas to business unit defense and commercial product areas,” D’Agati explains. “To that end, I am responsible for all aspects of my research, including project management, networking, and presenting my ideas to many audiences within RTX to establish relevant collaborations.”

Speaking of presenting his work to audiences, D’Agati will present a conference paper at this year’s SPIE Defense + Security Conference. In addition, D’Agati has recently submitted two patent applications as part of his ongoing research at RTRC.

When he’s not working, D’Agati enjoys a wide-range of hobbies.

“I play soccer and tennis consistently, and recently picked up golf and volleyball. Otherwise, I like to play piano, do fun crafts like making epoxy coasters or go to the beach/skiing depending on the season.”
