Jun Xu defends his thesis on Chemically Sintered Cu Nanocrystal Thin Films and Multiscale Devices 

ESE PhD Candidate Jun Xu defended his thesis on Chemically Sintered Cu Nanocrystal Thin Films and Multiscale Devices on Friday, July 17th. Advised by Professor Cherie Kagan, Xu’s research focuses on creating nanocrystal-based conductive inks for printed electronics and advanced semiconductor packaging.

As Xu explains, his research “reduces production complexity and costs in semiconductor manufacturing.” Doing so, “strengthens copper conductor performance while streamlining fabrication processes for the semiconductor industry.”

Obstacles that Xu encountered during his time at Penn didn’t pertain to overcoming intrinsic challenges within his research. Rather, as an international student, Xu missed his family. Conversely, Xu’s personal setbacks propelled him toward growth, particularly as it relates to his research. To separate himself from personal struggles, Xu went to the lab. And that’s when “my biggest research breakthroughs happened,” Xu explains.

Professor Kagan’s lab contributed to Xu’s most memorable experiences at Penn. Xu attributes those sentiments to his relationships with peer colleagues. “Everyone was very helpful. The lab environment was a warm, supportive home.”

Xu extends gratitude to Professor Kagan and the mentorship she provided throughout his doctorate. “She kept me grounded when I was overconfident and encouraged me when I was down,” Xu explains.

Next, Xu will work as a Process Engineer at Applied Materials, a semiconductor equipment manufacturer in California.

When Xu’s not researching, he enjoys skiing, particularly in Colorado as well as locally in the Pocono Mountains. In addition, he enjoys fishing in the Delaware River and at different parks in New Jersey.
